PRO’S

Straight line speed. For a guy his size, Johnston does a good job dropping his weight in and out of breaks and when preparing for cuts when running after the catch. For such a big/long player, it is impressive how well he moves after the catch. He is very explosive and though he is long, he is capable of quick movements and getting his body going upfield in a hurry after the catch. Against Oklahoma St. (2022, 1st QTR, 3:00), absolutely blows by CB, out runs his quarterback’s arm, climbs ladder between 2 defenders and controls the football through contact with the ground. I like Johnston’s aggressive swipe at defenders who come in low on him when he’s the ball carrier; uses his length to an advantage here.

CON’S

Limited route tree, drags, deep crosses and vertical routes. Johnston likes to wait for the ball to come to his body in contested situations and this results in a few dropped passes. I’d like to see him box out with his frame and extend his arms and snatch the football, i.e. vs. Oklahoma St. (2022, 4th QTR, 9:45). Though Johnston is a bigger player, at times it’s as if he’s lighter than his frame appears, he gets stopped in his tracks by physical DBs when they get a clean hit on him. Only had 14 receiving TDs over 3 seasons, I think this is due to his inability to establish dominance over the defender in contested catch situations.

OVERALL

Johnston has major play making ability with his size and speed combination, and Max Duggan could not capitalize on all of the opportunities Johston created. I believe if Johnston is matched up with a quarterback with major arm talent, he could really produce at the next level. Johnston isn’t just a big vertical threat, he has great body control and oftentimes had to redirect to either go up or come back for balls thrown by Max Duggan. Johnston had a 34% contested catch rate in 2022 which can not be overlooked. Johnston needs to do a better job of utilizing his frame and wingspan to extend for the ball and secure those contested catches.
