PRO’S
Roschon Johnson came to Texas as a QB and transitioned to RB, so it can be said that his best football at the position is still ahead of him. He does a good job squaring up defenders when picking up the blitz or an open defender. Johnson is light on his feet for a bigger back, capable of moving quickly to avoid low contact. Sharp cut makes Kansas St. safety look silly on an inside run (2021, 1st QTR, 10:20). Patient, shows willingness to allow his blocks to develop, and doesn’t try to do too much on his own.
CON’S
Though Roschon was a dual threat QB in High School, his limited workload as a full time ball carrier in College makes me uncertain that he would be able to handle a full time workload on an NFL roster. I would like to see him get a little lower when carrying the ball or blocking defenders, and he needs to use more legs and less upper body. Relies on blockers/play calls, doesn’t free lance often and misses some opportunities for cut-backs. Capable of chunk gains but lacks the creativity for home runs.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
Roschon has the experience of a 4 year starter but handled a limited workload and will be headed to the NFL without too much wear and tear on his tires. He is clearly a team player, showing it by transitioning from QB to RB1 a week before the start of his Freshman season. Though Johnson was in the shadow cast by teammate Bijan Robinson, he was thought well enough of to be mentioned in the 2022 pre-season Doak Walker award watch list.
