PRO’S

Athleticism, Play Strength & Versatility. Can play ILB, OLB and cover in the slot. Made a play against Louisville in 2022 where he was doing an inside blitz, hurdles the RB as he steps up to make a block, lands smoothly and chases down the QB for a sack, and it looked so smooth as he transitioned from the jump to the chase. 77.4 Coverage grade from PFF was 31st amongst all LBs in 2022, his 5 PBUs were 5th most amongst LBs in 2022. Shows great coverage instincts Vs. UNC 2022, 1st QTR, 6:52, TE releases on speed out, quickly reads pass, attached to TEs hip and gets there as the ball arrives for a PBU.

CON’S

Upper body strength. When Carter has the time and is anticipating engaging with an oncoming blocker he has a better time holding his ground but he has a tough time generating power to fight through blocks in short area situations. I’d like to see him a little more controlled when coming free as a blitzer, this will help prevent over-running the QB and giving the QB an out.

OVERALL

Per ClemsonTigers.Com, in 2022, Barrett Carter joined former Butkus Award winners Nakobe Dean and Isaiah Simmons among recent Power Five players to post at least 10 tackles for loss, five sacks, multiple interceptions and multiple forced fumbles in a single season. The production is there and I expect Carter to continue to ascend in 2023. Carter is not only an elite athlete, he’s a cerebral player. Several times when watching his film I noticed him inching towards a zone drop pre-snap as if he knew where the ball was going to be thrown, sure enough it was thrown there and he made the play. The combination of size, speed/agility, aggressiveness and intelligence intrigue me and I’m looking forward to watching him in 2023.
