PRO’S

Lance Boykin is a tough defensive back that can lay a big hit or get his hands on the ball to make a play (13:20 left in 2nd qtr vs Buffalo, Boykin is lined up at the second level to the right side of the field. The ball is snapped to RB McDuffie on a HB Counter, Boykins is able to track McDuffie thru traffic and lay a hit to secure the tackle). He can mirror WRs at the LOS and will get in WR’s jerseys at the snap. Boykin stays low & compact in his back pedal and is smooth like Jiffy peanut butter in/out of breaks. Boykin can also give WRs trouble on contested catches with his 6’2 200 lbs frame. He played down in the box for 43 snaps last season and likes to peek into the backfield to disrupt screens and runs (11 mins left in 1st qtr vs Army, Boykin is lined up in man coverage to the bottom of the screen. Once the ball is snapped the safety in the box attacks and Boykins identifies the rush and quickly closes around the edge for an ankle tackle for loss).

CON’S

Boykin moves well on the field either laterally or vertically but just doesn’t have that elite closing speed. He can also be handsy with WRs down field leading to flags (3). Boykin has trouble being left on an island in man coverage and will most likely be a zone coverage DB at the next level. Boykin also tends to open up his hips early letting WRs read his direction (13:25 left in 2nd qtr vs Troy, Boykin is in man coverage to the top of the screen with the outside WR. The WR makes a subtle head fake and Boykins opens slightly and then the WR inside steps towards middle of field, Boykins is 3 yds out and WR makes the catch easily) . Although he tackles well, twitchy WRs can get the better of Boykin in the open field.

OVERALL

Lance Boykin’s physicality at the LOS and short area movement will peek NFL GMs interest late in the draft. His scheme versatility will also play a part in GMs looking for a value pick close to the end of the draft. Boykins has some raw technique that can be tightened up with good coaching. Boykin provides good depth early and may earn his way onto the depth chart with special team play.
