PRO’S

Jarrett Patterson has interior offensive line versatility with 3 years experience at Left Guard and his final year was at Center.  Plays with a good center of gravity keeping his pads low.  Good at keeping his feet and hands moving, with his head on a swivel always looking to pick up a block in pass protection.  He is a good athletic interior offensive lineman with good lateral movement.  Nice football IQ is exemplified in his ability to pick up stunts, which many players don’t do well at until they’re coached up in the NFL.

CON’S

Patterson doesn’t have the best length which often leads to his opponents getting their hands on him first.  He holds up well enough against this in the NCAA but may leave him more exposed in the NFL and better opponents.  He is a good pass protector, but he probably won’t contribute too well in a power run game, while excelling more in zone blocking at the NFL level.  He’s a 5th year senior (graduate) at Notre Dame so he’s 23 years old – not a big deal, but some GMs may get nit-picky about it.  Personally, I think a weight of 304 is fine for a Center, but leaves me concerned for a Guard.  While I think he offers the possibility of versatility, in my mind I have him pegged as a Center in the NFL.

OVERALL

Notre Dame is one of the most consistent and top OL-producing college programs and Patterson is the latest fine product to come from there.  He very much, in my opinion, defines this OL class – not flashy, but solid, versatile and should get the job done.  Patterson is a safe pick who should go anywhere from the mid-second to mid-third round, and who should slide in Day-1 at either C, LG, or RG on his NFL team.  Whoever drafts Patterson will be getting a dependable and intelligent player.
