PRO’S
Dontayvion Wicks is very good at tracking the ball in flight when running vertical routes. Quick/sudden when redirecting, puts defenders in tough positions when they are playing him closely. Does a good job of concentrating on the ball even when the defender is close and they are engaging in contact. Good catcher of the football when it is away from his body and he has to extend.
CON’S
A little wild at the top of his routes, and has wasted movement. Needs to become more precise/work on his body control, and I believe some of his movement at the end of his routes leads to dropped balls. Willing blocker but seems a little lost, comes to balance too soon and needs to approach defender more closely before breaking down and beginning his block, swiping instead of engaging.
OVERALL
Wicks had a monster 2021 season in which he broke Herman Moore’s single season receiving record at Virginia and landed himself on the All-ACC 1st team. Following the season, Virginia changed its coaching staff and Wicks saw his role change resulting in a lackluster 2022 season. He drops quite a few balls but I think that can be cleaned up if he works on his mechanics. The big play potential is there but I don’t know if he will be consistent enough to be more than a WR3 in an NFL offense.
