PRO’S

Length, 34” arms, 82 ⅞” wingspan and nearly 6’3” height! Very good in man to man coverage, utilizes his length to swarm opponents and to eliminate passing windows, also utilizes very good eye discipline, rarely getting caught straying from his responsibility. Eye discipline and quickness combine to create quick breaks on the football. Great at mirroring the WR at the line of scrimmage, lateral quickness and eye discipline. Willing to throw his body around in the run game, saw instances in which Brents sticks/wraps bigger ball carriers cleanly as well as instances where he takes on pulling linemen and shuts down the play. Played well overall against one of the top Wide Receivers in the 2023 Draft class, Quentin Johnston.

CON’S

Brents loses in instances when it goes from a coverage responsibility to a hand to hand battle, when he’s struggling physically with the receiver you see his eyes raise, he loses position in his coverage and gives the receiver an opportunity to break away from him. Brents has moments where he is in great position at the catch point but his instincts do not take him to the receivers hands or the football, these plays are very close to being pass breaks up but result in a catch. Outside most man on run play against TCU, over commits to the ball carrier and does not set the edge, sets up a big gain.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Jim Nagy said it himself, no other DB boosted their draft stock at the Senior Bowl as much as Brents. Jim mentioned Brents record setting 82 ⅞” wing span which was on full display as well as his air tight man to man coverage all week. Brents showcased elite quickness at the combine, coming in with the top 3 cone and 20 yard shuttle time of all defensive backs who participated. Brents is better at the beginning of the route than he is at the top of it. I’d like to see Julius work on how he plays the defender on deeper routes and work on reacting to the receivers hands and eyes when trailing him so that he can find the football.
