PRO’S
At 6’7”, 327 lbs, Tyler Guyton is a mountain on the offensive line. He has the lower body strength to go with it, making him difficult to bull rush. Guyton’s dropback is quick. He’s athletic vertically and an above average second level blocker. Oklahoma frequently pulled him in motion and Guyton is quick enough to create lanes on the move. He latches on to rushers tightly with strong arms. He has a mean streak, using his size to intimidate defenders at the college level. Oklahoma trusted Guyton to work on an island in pass protection. He’s a decent mirrorer and an already solid pass protector. His tape against Texas was impressive, and he showed a wide variety of hand counters. He defends counter moves very well, and finishes reps with tenacity.
CON’S
On pass reps, Guyton can get caught flat footed. He stops his motions, allowing speed rushers to fly by. His balance must improve. There were many snaps where Guyton ended up on the ground. Surprisingly, Guyton’s upper body isn’t very strong. When he’s hit in the chest with a powerful bull rush he can be knocked off his feet. It doesn’t help that Guyton has the tendency to give up leverage easily. He’s a taller tackle, but he needs to close up his hands to stop rushers from getting under his pads. Guyton is still learning run blocking technique. He’s a pure athlete when run blocking instead of relying on angles and hand usage. Guyton can whiff altogether and lunge in the run game.
OVERALL
Guyton is athletic enough to be a starting tackle, which already makes him an exciting prospect. He’s had many promising reps in pass protection, and has experience as an island tackle. Guyton won’t be ready to start as a rookie and needs to improve his balance, chest strength and flat feet to avoid being thrown around by edge rushers. Guyton has the potential to be a punishing run blocker, but needs plenty of polishing. There’s a decent amount for Guyton to work on, but he has enough traits, skill and tape in a position that lacks prospects with those three.
He’s athletic enough to be a starting tackle, which already makes Guyton and intriguing tackle prospect. He then has promising pass protection skills and was trusted as an island pass protector (had some very good reps). He won’t be ready as a rookie and needs to improve his balance, upper body chest strength and occasional flat feet to avoid being thrown around by edge rushers. He has potential as a punishing run blocker, but needs polishing. Definitely a decent amount needs working on, but Guyton has enough traits, skills and tape in a position that lacks players like that.
