PRO’S
LSU transfer, Trey Palmer, is a fluid receiver who is used as a bigger slot option. He has great functional speed, burst and acceleration. Palmer is a deep threat that wins vertically. He combines quickness and suddenness to create separation on routes. Palmer can be fed screens and moon balls, which he tracks perfectly. He’ll add value for himself early on in his NFL career through his kick and punt returning skills.
CON’S
Palmer lacks the physicality and build to play the sideline. He struggled with drops this year and can lose focus off the ball. Palmer ran a very limited route tree, and has little experience with outside deep balls and screens. He will need to improve his release as physical corners will body him at the line. Palmer’s frame pigeonholes him as a pure slot guy, a less valuable role.
OVERALL
Trey Palmer profiles as an inside receiver. He has the movement skills and composure to be part of a spread passing attack. He can spread the field while also winning on short game receptions. Don’t expect much YAC from him, or a nuanced route tree. Palmer’s physicality limits him both as a contested catch and outside receiver. He will start as a rotational receiver while he adjusts to NFL physicality, and can grow into a solid slot option. Accomplished kick and punt returner for LSU in 2021 before transferring to Nebraska for his final campaign (who used him less in that role).
