Very quick hands, has a strong variety of pass rush moves (swim, chop, bend and rip). Nick does a good job of quickly shedding blocks on his way to the quarterback. Herbig is capable of getting his hips turned and setting the edge as a run defender. Decent back pedal and zone drop transitions. Very productive, led the Big 10 in sacks in 2022 with 11 and tackles for loss with 16. Backside pursuit.
CON’S
Good size for an LB but on the smaller side for a consistent walk-down OLB. Herbig is capable of standing up offensive linemen but does not showcase the strength to walk them back and make the pocket collapse. Though he has experience dropping in coverage, Nick does not gain depth or width well in zone.
OVERALL
3-4 OLB with a pass rush grade of 91.1 from the 2022 season. Quick hands, evasiveness and his burst off the snap add up towards making Herbig a very solid pass rushing prospect. Herbig may struggle when lined up with offensive tackles at the next level, his Defensive Coordinator will likely want to find ways to get him matched up with tight ends or schemed up as a free blitzer. Nick has shown the ability to drop in coverage and I believe he can bring more than just pass rush ability to whatever team he ends up on.
