PRO’S

[Nino] Mims is a natural play maker that plays much bigger than 5 ’11 with his high pointing skills (not a surprise that his vertical at the combine was 91-percentile). Mims’s body control is elite and could possibly be the best in this class. Mims will wist his body to make some catches that you think aren’t catchable. (14:58 left in 2nd qtr vs Texas Tech ‘22, DB shades Mims and he still caught the ball around the back of the DB) But he isn’t a one trick pony as he is great in the open field in run after the catch opportunities (7:10 left in 1st qtr vs Kent State, Gabriel find Mims over the middle & Mims weaves through defenders for 15+ yards) Mims doesn’t shy away from contact and plays violently in between the harsh marks. He has good enough shiftiness to make tacklers miss. Mims’s field awareness is elite as he dominates the sidelines with footwork and placement. Mims was also utilized as a punt returner which further enhances his value.

[Coach] Playmaker. Phenomenal track record of production, from HS throughout his college career Mims has gotten it done. Soft hands, hand eye coordination and ball tracking ability stand-out. Big play WR, led Big 12 in yards per reception in 2021 & 2022. His ball tracking/concentration shows 2022 Vs. Texas Tech (2nd QTR, 14:53) defender is in tight coverage on his inside, ball is thrown to defender’s shoulder on a fade route, Mims reaches up and over the defender with one hand and comes down with a catch. Capable of running routes from the slot and outside. Willing blocker on outside carries, screen plays.

CON’S

[Nino] Although he plays bigger his size is an issue as larger DBs/S will muscle him around. He will have to win off the line regularly. Has good speed and separation but his open field speed isn’t elite and his route tree isn’t extensive.

[Coach] Mims is fast but I’d like to see him develop his releases a bit so he can really showcase that speed when he’s stacking trailing defenders. Though he was highly successful at Oklahoma, the Sooners ran a  high volume passing attack in a conference that is not necessarily known for the strength of its defenses. Mims wasn’t asked to run many routes at Oklahoma and we will need to see how well he expands that route tree at the next level.

OVERALL

[Nino] Mims may draw some concerns due to being a shade under 5’11 but the rest of the body of work is top notch. He has sneaky speed which was on display at the NFL Combine (4.38 – 40). Mims is a pitbull when it comes to contested catches which I think GMs and coaches will see even though he is under 6ft. Mims can play all over the field but in a system where he doesn’t have to be the feature WR and can play free – and if so, watch out! Marvin Mims could be a mid-Day 2 guy and a great complimentary WR for an NFL team. Player Comp: Darnell Mooney/Travis Benjamin

[Coach] Mims holds the Texas state records for most receiving yards in a career with 5,485 and most receiving yards in a single season with 2,629. Mims transitioned very well to the College game, earning Freshman All-American honors after putting up 610 yards and 9 touchdowns. Mims is a field stretcher who has a knack for coming down with tough receptions. I think Mims will be an excellent consolation prize for a team hoping to land Jalin Hyatt early but does not get the opportunity to. Mims has similar field stretching ability and can be a solid 2nd option or very strong 3rd option wherever he ends up.
