Cooper DeJean is a high level athlete with a nose for the football, a knack for the big play and experience at multiple positions in the secondary. Good hips, balance and eye discipline displayed in close area man coverage situations. Rarely gives large passing windows, makes receivers work for their reception. DeJean is given the true CB1 treatment in Iowa, lined up at LCB, and doesn’t travel. Closing speed. Vs. Iowa St., 2023, 1st QTR 4:10, chases down ball carrier from back side of play, navigates through clutter and comes down w/ TFL. Through 3 games in 2023, DeJean has only let up 8 yards after catch.
Limited reps against top tier wide receiver talent. Matched up with Ohio St. in 2022 and struggled, 45.7 PFF coverage grade for the game while giving up 118 yards on 3 receptions. Though DeJean gave up 118 yards on 3 receptions, the receiver he was facing was targeted 8 times (37.5 reception %). Will get handsy beyond 5 yards (grabbing/pushing), will need to clean this up before heading to the NFL.
Currently #13 on Bruce Feldman’s 2023 Freak List. Feldman notes Dejean won an Iowa state title in the long jump and 100 meter dash and set an Iowa Hawkeyes record in 2022 with 3 interceptions returned for a touchdown. Iowa is known for developing gritty defenders, DeJean combines that grit with elite athleticism and play making ability. DeJean is great in man coverage as well as zone coverage and is sound when contributing as a run defender. DeJean is a day 1 starter at the next level and is a sure fire 1st round selection.
