PRO’S
Former 3-star recruit, Trice took over full time DE snaps in 2022 and exceeded expectations with 9.0 sacks. He earned most pressures in the Power 5 and was named the Huskies’ most valuable defensive player. Trice is a relentless pass rusher and strings together pass rush moves well. As a bigger edge, Trice has terrific contact balance and will convert speed to power on the outside. When lineman strike first, he understands how to manipulate space and get under the lineman’s pad level. Trice plays like he’s shot out of a cannon and plays with intensity and urgency that few players can match. Against UCLA, Week 5 2022, 1st QTR 9:25, explodes off the edge, feints to the inside to set up an over-swim move on the outside, loses no steam going directly to the QB, and hits him as the ball comes out, forcing an incompletion. Against the run, Trice has the ability to squeeze gaps and power through blocks
CON’S
Trice lacks bend and is inconsistent with his pad level. With his big frame it’s tougher for him to get low and reduce his upper half. Trice is an attack defender, so he can struggle to play in read and react scenarios. He’s less developed as a run defender and can get lost in complex run plays. His block deconstruction is still very raw. Trice can miss tackles in the backfield; there are times when his aggressiveness hurts him. I want to see him win the edge more on stretch runs.
OVERALL
Trice was dominant in 2022 with an 88.5 PFF grade. He put on an absolute show in the PAC-12 and then the main question is how he’ll face against greater competition. Talented tackles may abuse his pad level. Trice uses his athletic traits to the fullest, but isn’t an elite athlete. It’s a shame we haven’t watched Trice go against the top athletes at the lineman position. So far this season Trice hasn’t racked up similar stats to last season, but he continues to make a down to down impact. He’s a true pass rush specialist that can develop into a 3-down rusher. It’s difficult for him to improve his stock more after last season. The biggest thing capping his draft stock is the “PAC-12” schedule.
