PRO’S

Size, athleticism & arm strength. Deep ball accuracy, through 5 games in 2023 Maye is completing 55% of balls thrown 20+ yards (6th in the nation per PFF). Poise, Maye has a 69.3 passing grade while under pressure which is currently 4th in the nation & his 52.5 completion percentage is currently tied with Caleb Wiliams for 9th in the nation. Maye has great footwork in the pocket and combines the footwork with his size to put himself in positions to scan the field freely while going through reads. Touch, Maye does a good job of dialing it up and putting zip on the ball when needed and dialing it down and letting the ball float to his receivers when hitting them on the run.

CON’S

Relies on his tremendous arm strength and tends to force it into his 1st read rather than going through his progression. Though I respect his competitiveness and willingness to run, Maye leaves himself open to unnecessary hits as a ball carrier, I’d like to see him slide more often. Maye will keep his feet active even when in a clean pocket which affects the accuracy of some throws that in most cases for a player of his capabilities would be easy completions.

OVERALL

Drake Maye is an elite talent who came into the 2023 season with plenty of accolades and extremely high expectations placed upon him. Maye has shown plenty of poise and grit as he balances those expectations while adapting to the new offensive system under coach Chip Lindsey. Maye dealt with a high amount of pressure in 2022 and again thus far through the 2023 season, Drake has found a way to succeed at a high level regardless. Maye has rare size, elite arm strength and impressive athleticism. In 2022, Maye finished the season ranked 8th in rushing yards amongst all ACC ball carriers. I expect Maye to be the 2nd QB taken in the 2024 NFL Draft (if Caleb Williams enters).
