PROS

Tyrique Stevenson is a very physical, punch you in the mouth type of DB. He has no problem getting in a WR’s face and carries himself on the field with all the swag. At 6’0, 198 lbs, and 4.45 – 40 speed he has the length, speed and size to challenge WRs vertically. Stevenson is in his element during press coverage, it’s almost like second nature to him (11:39 left in 1st qtr vs Texas A&M, Stevenson is lined up in press man coverage to the top of the screen with inside leverage. Off the snap the WR takes 1 step and cuts cross field and Stevenson’s initial first step is lighting quick and he is able to run with the WR step for step. Ball was thrown low for incompletion.). They should have nicknamed Stevenson ‘DETOUR’ at The U because he consistently forced WRs off their routes and made them adjust (12:58 left in 3rd qtr vs NC State, 2 WRs lined up at bottom of screen, 1 to the top (Stevenson side), Leary snaps the ball and Tyrique forces the WR inside towards the hash marks and Leary throws it towards the sideline for incompletion. Stevenson was able to force WR off the route). He has good  ball skills in stride with the WR.

CONS

Although Stevenson has speed he isn’t quick and smooth in his backpedal as other top DBs in the class. His feet are choppy at times and leads him to have to play from behind ( 9:50 left in the 2nd qtr vs UNC, WR A.Green is lined up at the bottom of the screen with Stevenson giving 5 yds of cushion. Green gets Stevenson in the backpedal for 15 yds then quick jabs foot outside and cuts in for instant separation as Tyrique’s transition is choppy, resulting in a long TD). As is the case with a lot of physical DBs Stevenson tends be aggressive at the LOS and early in routes and can bite on the double move leading to big plays or TDs. While Stevenson is elite in press coverage he could use some polishing of the technique in zone/ route recognition (9:06 left in 1st qtr vs UNC, Stevenson in zone coverage lined up with WR J.J. Jones once the ball is snapped the RB rolls to Stevenson side and Tyrique bites which leads to Maye going over the top to Jones for a long TD). GMs at the next level will want to see Tyrique clean up on the arm tackling to try to wrap up more keeping the missed tackle rate low.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Stevenson’s physical presence and top notch press coverage ability will draw interest from many GMs in the back half of the 2nd and early 3rd rounds. His ability to “Detour” WRs is one of the tops in the class but he will need to clean up a few technique issues at the next level which can be taught with correct coaching.
