PRO’S
Fast & explosive, Josh Downs is a threat to defensive backs vertically as well as when given a cushion and crossing the field. If Downs catches the ball in space, he is very difficult to catch. Downs is a ball snatcher, when he is on the move and is thrown a ball a bit outside of his body, he plucks it out of the air aggressively which often allows him to keep forward momentum. Beautiful Whip Route vs. Florida A&M (2022, 2nd quarter, :10). Alpha catch vs. Florida A&M (2022, 4th quarter, 12:38), climbs the ladder on a deep post in between 2 defenders, takes contact and comes down with the TD.
CON’S
Does not show the ability to fight through contact and break the initial tackle after the catch. Due to lack of size/strength, gets completely thrown off his route while crossing the middle by a linebacker against Florida A&M (2022, 2nd quarter, :25).
OVERALL
Purely a slot receiver. Downs is explosive and has great body control in short spaces, will be a terrific option in the red zone and short yardage situations when trying to convert 3rd downs. Downs showcases the ability to regularly get open and to come down with balls that are thrown outside of his body. YAC ability is terrific when given space but for the most part if a defender is close, Downs will get open enough to create a window for the QB but will likely not extend the play once contact is made.
