PRO’S

Jaylon Jones has a high motor and always seems to be around the action (12:55 left in 4th qtr vs Arkansas, Jones’ man goes in motion from bottom of screen to top. QB snaps the ball and throws a shuttle pass to the WR in motion. Jones closes like a bullet and gets a TFL). Jones has great awareness of that field and many times will be able to leave his man / position to make an impactful play (9 mins left in 3rd qtr vs UNC, Jones is lined up as the outside corner and is able to read QB Sam Howell’s eyes & comes off his WR. He sees #84 releases out of the slot freely and closes quickly to get a hand in and disrupt the pass saving a wide open TD). JJ has good ball skills and does well in contested catch situations. Although not extremely fast Jaylon can get downhill quickly in run support and he is an excellent wrap tackler.

CON’S

Jones is a good all around corner but can not be left on an island and he is a much better zone defender. Scheme will definitely play a part in his draft destination. His backpedal could use some work as he isn’t as fluid or crisp out of breaks as most top DBs in the class. He also tends to play too upright which doesn’t help the transitions in and out of the back pedal. Jones sometimes opens his hips too early and tends to dictate to the WR his positioning, he will need to tighten that up at the next level.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Jaylon Jones ability to process quickly, his high motor, and his knack for being around the ball will make him a later round value pick. Some of Jones’ technique flaws can be fixed at the next level and you can see flashes of elite coverage capability like the UNC reference. Jones will definitely be drafted and will be a great complimentary piece to the secondary on an NFL team.
