PRO’S

Joey has quick feet and the speed to come down in coverage and defend the slot. He is an excellent bump coverage defender.  Porter shows a natural knack for causing turnovers. Bloodhound (Missed 2 ints vs Purdue, and recovered a fumble). He plays with a dawg mentality and is extremely confident.  Porter is capable of playing physical press coverage. His physical strength allows him to force receivers to the sideline instead of working back to the middle of the field.  The apple does not fall far from the tree as he is physical like his father (who was a LB in the NFL).  At 6’2 and almost 200 lbs, Porter has the size to high point the football and challenge the larger WRs.  Joey is smooth as silk in his backpedal transitions and his vision/quick trigger is elite to break out of his back pedal and attack (multiple tackles on Bigsby in the Auburn game).  He closes on the ball fast and is a very good tackler in space.  I believe his INT numbers are low because QBs do not challenge him.  Porter has a 86.7 QBR when targeted in ‘21 (Neither Finley or Ashford would challenge Porter – I looked multiple times and he was never challenged).

CON’S

Joey’s physicality tends to lead to some flags as Porter can get handsy (called 2x vs Purdue when covering Charlie Jones).  Porter tends to give up some underneath routes.

OVERALL

Porter is an uber-talented DB.  Porter not only possesses the physical skills to cover WRs but is extremely fluid with his movement (hips).  His body moves but his head and neck stay locked in!  He shows a high football IQ and a natural sense for the ball.  You can tell his father taught him how to break down film!  Joey gives me a Aqib Talib vibe in how he can frustrate receivers and how he uses it to his advantage.  At 6’2 almost 200 lbs with his skillset, you have the makings of a shutdown corner that will be making plays on SUNDAYS!
